Tip of the Week - A Healthy Swap for Chips or Croutons

This week I'm adding another video from the web show "Reluctantly Healthy" with host Judy Greer.  In this video Judy's co-host is Aida Mollenkamp (I've seen her on Food Network).  They are showing us a healthy alternative to chips and croutons.   Chickpeas are a good low fat, source of  protein and folic acid.  I'll be trying this one out. I think it will be great on salads.  There are also come fun out takes at the end of the video that are always fun to watch!

Note:  You can turn off my blog music with the iPod player on the right hand side before playing the video.

Fashion Friday - Find Your Perfect Jeans Style Part I

Something most of us wear on a regular basis is the basic jean.  Jeans match with so many different styles of tops, sweaters, coats and they are so comfortable.  However, most of us don't know which style of jeans to wear that best flatters our own body shape.  It can be very hard to find that perfect pair of jeans.  So today I'm posting some choices for different body types.  Since there are a few styles to choose from for each body shape this will be part I of my fashion post.  These jean styles are suggested by Cosmopolitan.com.

Body Shape:  Hourglass

What to look for:  If you are an hourglass, a classic, wide-legged trouser with a mid-rise and flat front will keep you looking slim in all the right places—but still show off your sexy curves.

Once choice: 7 For All Mankind High Waist Slim Denim Trouser in Atlantic Twilight Wash, $169, www1.bloomingdales.com

Body Shape: Pear-shaped

What To Look For: Pear-shaped girls with curvier hips should steer clear of anything super-tapered and go for a low-rise flare or trouser style. This creates overall balance, which helps keep your hips looking slim and streamlined.

One choice: Hudson Gwen Wide Leg in Oldmill, $165, hudsonjeans.com

Body Shape:  Plus-sized

What To Look For: If you're plus-sized, a darker-rinse denim is the way to go—just make sure it's either straight-legged (slightly form-fitting) or a trouser style. Both of these looks are slimming.

One choice:  Forever 21 Fab Skinny Jeans (Short), $12.50, forever21.com

Body Shape:  Tall

What To Look For: When you're tall, you can definitely rock long and lean straight-legged styles—or go retro and try flared, '70s-inspired denim.

One choice:  MiH Jeans New York 5 Pocket Flare Jeans, $214.19, us.asos.com

Body Shape:  Boy Figure

What To Look For: If your body is more straight up and down, opt for a mid-rise jean with a slight boot-cut opening or flare to create a curvier silhouette from top to bottom.

One choice:  7 For All Mankind Skinny Bootcut in Malibu Sands, $189, 7forallmankind.com

Body Shape:  Petite

What To Look For: Petite girls should stick with a slim-cut pair of jeans. Try a cute boot-cut or sexy, cropped skinnies.

Once choice:  ASOS PETITE Exclusive Light Blue Skinny Jean, $55.40, us.asos.com

Always & Tampax Always Radiant Collection

I received a sample Always & Tampax Always Radiant Collection to try from Influenster's VoxBox testing program.  The collection included a cute pink purse that you can carry with you discretely.  It's pretty and looks like a small make up bag so it's very inconspicuous. The products are from the trusted brands and offer reliable protection.  They also have a re-sealable wrapper that is so much better than anything offered before.  It's a wonderful new collection.  You can read more about the Radiant Collection at Always and Tampax.

You can buy this new line at retailers nationwide.  The suggested retail price ranges from $3.99 to $9.49 depending on sizes purchased.

Disclaimer:  This product was received complimentary through the VoxBox product testing program at Influenster.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Sally Hansen Magnetic Nail Color

I received a sample of Sally Hansen Magnetic Nail Color to try from Influenster's VoxBox testing program.  These polishes do not contain Formaldehyde, DBP or Toluene which is a positive.  And when using the polish there is not as strong odor as with some polishes. They may have other ingredients that are not as natural or organic, but at least they do make an effort to keep out three main ingredients that are toxic.

The color I received to sample is Polar Purple.  I personally really like this color.  I used it as my pedicure and it looks great with my sandals.  I've never used a magnetic nail color before so it took me some time to figure out the right technique.  Once I did, WOW.  I really like this product.  It's so much fun to use and looks so neat once you are done.  There is a cap on top that contains a magnet.  I used a base coat first then I opened this polish and applied the first layer on all my toes.  Once I finished, instead of letting that first coat dry, I applied a thicker coat and immediately applied the magnet over that second coat.  If you don't use the magnet right away, the effect won't be correct.  There is a small ledge that keeps the magnet off the nail and you hold it over the nail for 10 seconds.  I kind of twisted it slightly back and forth during the 10 seconds and it gave the color a neat looking wave effect.  I first tried to cover all the nails on the first foot but that won't work, you have to do this process for each nail right away to get it to work properly. This is such a fun product and  my toes look so pretty.  I also used a clear top coat which really makes the design pop.   I can't wait to try more colors.  You can read more about this polish at www.sallyhansen.com.

You can buy this polish at chain drug stores, food stores and mass merchandisers nationally.  The suggested retail price is $9.99. This is a product I will buy and I'll try to use it on my finger nails as well.  They have a wide color selection.  This is one I would recommend to others who want a fun nail polish to try out and who want to have a neat looking design that they don't have to go to a salon to get. It's easy to do on your own.

Tip of the Week - Spicy Green Smoothie Recipe

This week, I'm sharing a video from a web show called "Reluctantly Healthy" hosted by Judy Greer.  (We've seen her in the movies 13 going on 30, 27 Dresses, What Women Want and she's made guest appearances on TV shows like Three and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory).   In this episode Julieanna Hever author of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition" is sharing her recipe for a spicy green smoothie.

I'm often asked for my recipe for green smoothies and there are many variations I've personally tried.  This one is good (I added regular water instead of coconut water) and you can taste the spice.  However, the Cayenne pepper is a good boost for your metabolism.  If you are looking for a new recipe to try on your green smoothies, this is a good alternative way to make them.  There are also some other great videos in the "Reluctantly Healthy" web series so check those out when you have time for more great healthy food ideas.

Note:  You can turn off my blog music with the iPod on the right hand side before watching the video.

August 17th Day 17:
Exercise:
Yesterday I rode my bike 3.5 miles and walked 2 miles.  I also watered my garden.

                                                      Sean Connery riding a bike.

Food:
I ate some oatmeal with strawberries, some rice with chicken and vegetables. I also drank 100% fruit juices with all three meals. I ate some Spanish peanuts for a snack.

Items to note:
See my contact information on the tabs above if you want to send me an email with any questions or suggestions.  With my "HLNB Challenge" I'm logging my daily activities of how I keep moving.  I'm not offering any medical advice or making any guarantees.  This is meant for fun and if you want to follow along I hope it will be fun and encouraging  for you too.  I'm also not logging everything I'm eating, only listing the healthier items. I'm trying to convert my family's food choices to more healthy options and fresh foods selections as well.  On days I'm listing more it means I'm replacing less healthy foods with healthier choices.  This is one of my personal healthy living goals. One day when I look back, I hope to see improvements on my activities and on my eating habits. Thanks for following along in the journey.

Fashion Friday - Taylor Swift Style

Taylor Swift has a new album coming out called Red.  She recently talked about the release of her new album on her You Tube channel Taylor Swift Web Chat and G+ Hangout .  We always like Taylor's style so today I'm posting pictures of Taylor's wonderful sense of fashion.   I'm posting the lyric video for We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together one of her new singles from the album after the pictures.
