Guest Post - Sleep Towards a Healthier Lifestyle

Today  we are featuring another guest post article.  This article explores Sleep Toward a Healthier Lifestyle.  This article has some wonderful tips for your personal sleep habits.  It is written by Zoe and you will see her biography at the end of the post.  Please feel free to leave any questions or comments after the article.

Sleep Towards a Healthier Lifestyle

Sleep is underestimated and often ignored when we consider just how healthy our lifestyles are. A lagging mind or slight weight gain may not always be down to your diet, but how you’re sleeping at night plays a big role in our day-to-day performance and body functioning. Common sleep problems such as insomnia are primarily caused by bad sleeping habits, so here are a few ways that you can start sleeping towards a healthier lifestyle:

•    Focus on your body clock – if you get out of bed at the same time every day, your body clock will soon adjust and set itself. Though it may be difficult if you have a varied schedule, waking up and falling asleep at the same time every day will ensure better quality sleep.

•    Keep a “sleep” diary – a great tip is to keep a diary by your bed to note down anything that’s worrying or troubling you. This acts a psychological ‘freeing’ of the mind, in that noting worries down takes them out of your mind, so that you can sleep easier.

•    Be wary about napping – as naps can disrupt your body clock, it’s best to nap only when absolutely necessary. Set your alarm an hour ahead, give yourself time to wake up and move about again.

•    Think about your mattress – if your mattress is quite old and becoming uncomfortable, it’s always a good idea to start going mattress shopping. We take for granted the importance of the bed we’re sleeping on when it comes to the quality of sleep we’re getting, so it’s worth having a shop around for a new single or double mattress. Also, consider how firm or soft you’d like your mattress to be, and shop with the person you’re sharing with if you do share a bed.

•    Consider your diet – eat any high-energy foods at the start of the day to improve your day-to-day productivity, and keep low-energy foods saved for the evening and nighttime. Avoid any sugary, high-energy foods like coffee, cola and sweets – they will give you an energy rush for a short time, and just cause you to crash later on.

•    Your sleeping atmosphere – having just the right atmosphere is crucial to a good night’s sleep. Too hot or too cold, and you’ll most likely wake up in the middle of the night and unable to get back to sleep for a while. Try keeping your window slightly open during the night if your room is too warm. It’s also a good idea to keep your bedroom window open for an hour a day to let some fresh air in.

•    A nighttime routine – it’s a good idea to get into a routine at night, so your body knows when it’s time for sleep. Try having a warm bath and a milky drink so your body can get into sleep mode. Though common advice is to avoid using your computer or watching television before bed, recent research has shown that browsing the Internet can actually help our minds to switch off, as we can escape and forget our worries. Either way, don’t partake in any strenuous or high energy activity before bed. Keep everything calm and quiet, and your body should let you know when it’s ready for sleep.

What Celebs Wore to the Oscars 2012

One of the biggest nights in awards season was last night at the Academy Awards.  Were you watching your favorites walk the red carpet?  If you happened to miss any, I've posted some of my favorites of the night below.  Who was your favorite?   Did you expect to see Angelina's dress? Or was her pose more interesting?  Not sure if she practiced that or not, but she sure has everyone talking about it today!  So that seems like a great place to start...

Angelina Jolie wore a beautiful black gown with open toe matching shoes.  She took this pose to the stage last night and the guys were copying her pose!  Hmmm, not sure she needed to do that, but everyone sure is talking about that pose today.  I'll bet they'll be talking about it next year too wondering what she will do then. What do you think?

Cameron Diaz looked great in this strapless Gucci gown with a matching clutch purse.  The necklace was also a great accessory.

Emma Stone wore a beautiful red gown with a bow at the neck.  This kind of reminds me of one of my favorite dresses Nicole Kidman wore (Best Oscar Fashions From the Past) with the bow at the neck.

Michelle Williams wore this pretty red , strapless Louis Vuitton gown with a cute pink clutch purse and a necklace that matched the silver bow at the waist.  I wanted to show the other view of her dress to show the train and the contrasting back as well.

Tina Fey wore a dark blue, strapless gown with a matching black clutch purse.  This dress makes her look so tall and slender.

Jennifer Lopez looked great, as she always does!  This was a very fashionable gown with a matching silver, cube clutch purse.  I also liked her matching earrings.

Penelope Cruz wore this beautiful off the shoulder slate blue, gown.  I have to say this might have been my favorite look of the evening.  I think she looks like a classic actress with the matching blue clutch purse, the matching necklace, bracelet and earring set just completes her look.  Very well done!

Sandra Bullock wore a black and white gown with wreath detailing.  In one of her interviews she turned around and the gown was a low scoop back.  She always looks so nice.  I noticed she has matching black fingernail polish as well!

Natalie Portman wore a red, vintage Dior strapless gown with a black clutch purse and I just loved her necklace.  She also has the black fingernail polish!

Octavia Spencer won Best Supporting Actress for The Help and she looked so glamorous in this white gown with silver accents and matching silver clutch purse.  I love her ring and I loved her acceptance speech.

I had to include this last picture of Judy Greer because I love her movies and I also love the new slender dresses.  This is the first gown I've seen on red carpets that kind of remind me of the slender dress trend with the contrasting colors that are so flattering to the figure. She looks great!

I'd like to end this post with our two favorite red carpet couples.  Hope you enjoyed my favorite fashion picks for the red carpet of the Academy Awards 2012.

                                                                      Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

                                                                George Clooney and Stacy Keibler

HLNB HealthyLivingChallenge II - Day 26

February 26th Day 26Yesterday I took a day of rest!

I ate a salad, made guacamole with an avocado and some pico de gallo, and I ate some homemade pasta sauce with bell peppers, tomatoes, onions green chiles and garlic.  I also drank 100 % fruit juice with all three meals.

Guest Post - Benefits of Organic Toothpaste and Mouth Wash

Today we have a wonderful article by Carolyn H. a former Dental Hygienist.  This is a very informative article that I'm sure you will enjoy reading.  If you have been a long time follower of my blog, you probably remember that this topic is one of the reasons I began this blog.  I noticed all the unnecessary ingredients in my family's dental products.  It's great to read an article from someone who has made a career in dental work.  Carolyn's bio is at the end of the article.  Please feel free to leave any comments or questions.

Benefits of Organic Toothpaste and Mouth Wash

Why you should go organic—even with your toothpaste

Most people know that oral hygiene is important—but evidence is growing that some of the chemical components of your toothpaste and mouthwash may not be as good for your smile as advertised. Your family should be aware of what’s in the products they use every day—and here are some of the reasons it makes sense to switch to organic.
  1. Removing harsh abrasives from your toothpaste can make your teeth healthier
Most toothpastes use a substance called “hydrated silica”, which is a fancy way to describe little shards of ground-up glass. This is the product that is supposed to grind away plaque and food debris as you brush. As you can imagine, it’s a pretty harsh substance, and evidence is mounting that your enamel can’t take the punishment of a hydrated silica sand-blast every morning and evening. While some organic products are accused of being ineffective, a toothpaste that leaves out the hydrated silica can make your teeth stronger and healthier, not weakened by constant erosion.
  1. No harmful antibiotic agents
The antibacterial Triclosan has found its way into many cleaning products, including hand soap, toothpaste, and mouthwash. While it’s non-toxic in isolation, some evidence suggests that it can react with the chlorine in your tap water to create harmful chemicals, including chloroform. Antibiotic agents are already overused in our society, encouraging the proliferation of drug-resistant bacteria. Using an antibiotic in your mouth has no clear health indications—your mouth is intended to play host to an ecosystem of harmless organisms that aid in digestion, and antibiotics kill everything, good and bad. An organic toothpaste and mouthwash are just as effective at clearing away the food particles that harmful bacteria feed on, without disrupting the balance of your mouth’s chemistry.
  1. No sodium lauryl sulfate
Sodium lauryl sulfate is the foaming agent that gives your mouth that attractive “rabid dog” look when you brush with chemical toothpaste. In concentration, it’s a powerful corrosive that is used to de-grease industrial surfaces. In short, it doesn’t belong in your mouth. Because it irritates the skin, it can encourage the growth of canker sores, and because it dries out the mouth, it can actually cause bacteria to flourish there. One of the main selling points of organic toothpaste is that sodium lauryl sulfate is nowhere to be found.
  1. Preventing enamel fluorosis
You’ve probably noticed children with discolored teeth, usually with blotches of white and yellow at the bottom of the front teeth. This is a symptom of enamel fluorosis, and, surprisingly, it may not be the result of too little brushing. It’s actually caused by too much exposure to fluoride from a non-organic toothpaste. It’s unsightly, disrupts the development of children’s enamel, and may make their teeth weaker rather than stronger. Most organic toothpastes limit or remove fluoride altogether, which reduces the risk of developing enamel fluorosis. Visit your dentist, and they’ll tell you—this is one of the most common reasons that kids and grown-ups feel dissatisfied with their smile.

                                                                             Mild Fluorosis

  1. Non-organic mouthwash may trigger the problem it’s intended to solve
Quacks can make a lot of money if they offer you a “cure” that provides temporary relief, and then makes things worse to keep you coming back. The alcohol content of mouthwash provides a sting that we have come to associate with cleanliness (no pain, no gain, right?), but once the temporary refreshment wears off, the alcohol dries out your mouth, leaving you more vulnerable to canker sores and harmful bacteria. You would think a dry mouth would be cleaner, but your saliva has natural bacteria-fighting properties that are weakened in a dry mouth. The purpose of mouthwash should not be to kill bacteria or sterilize your mouth; it should be to clear away debris and freshen your breath, and an organic mouthwash with essential oils can accomplish that goal without leaving your mouth irritated and dry.

Guest Post - The Ultimate Body Applicator by Cheryl Arnold

Today we have a wonderful guest post from Cheryl Arnold.  She is a distributor for  IT WORKS and is writing about one of their products The Ultimate Body Applicator.  She has had such positive results with this product that she wants to share with one of HLNB's lucky readers a chance to try this product first hand.  We will be conducting a giveaway with more details to come so keep watching for your chance to enter.  In the meantime, please enjoy Cheryl's article below and if you have any questions for her, she has her contact information at the end of her article.

The Ultimate Body Applicator

As close to magic as it gets. That is what we say about our lead product The Ultimate Body Applicator. This is an 11"x 22" non-woven applicator with 12 natural ingredients that will detox your body, tighten, tone, firm your skin, help fade scars and stretch marks, smooth cellulite and as a possible side effect help you lose inches (bad side effect right)?  You wear this applicator up to 8 hours and all you have to do is drink lots of water to flush the toxins out. This is not water weight! This is a detox product so your results will typically last 2-6 months, longer with a healthy lifestyle. You can place this applicator anywhere on your body, except for on your face. We have a special applicator that hydrates, plumps fine lines, tightens, tones and firms the skin on your face. We also have natural supplements, skin care products, protein shakes and protein bars to help keep you healthy.

When I was first introduced to this product by a friend that I have known for over 20 years, I said to her "yeah right"!  She came up to my work and applied the applicator.  I wore it for around 6 hours took it off remeasured myself and lost 2 1/2" and being a Mom of 3 what I really noticed was my stretch marks were completely faded and my skin was tighter! I called my friend and she shared with me information on our supplements and skin care and I really fell in love! I decided I wanted to be a part of helping people change their lives.

I have to tell you I decided to join this company as a distributor and it was a life changing decision! I am a single Mom of 3 and hated my job, I left work everyday crying.  I was miserable and it was taking a toll on myself and my children.  I joined IT WORKS in August 2009 and by April 2010 I fired my boss!  I couldn't believe that I'm being paid to do something I love. I am helping people on their road to getting or staying healthy, I have watched our products change so many peoples lives and it makes me so happy to watch their dreams come true both physically, emotionally and financially.  I am surprised how many people put so much garbage into and onto their bodies everyday.  I am proud to be with a company that is trying to change that.   You can read about all of our products on my website sexyskin.myitworks.com.

Here are some amazing before and after results!

February 22nd Day 22Yesterday I walked 1 mile and did some housework.

I ate a salad, an avocado, drank 8 oz of green smoothies and drank 100% fruit juice with all three meals.

Instead of buying a salad dressing you can make your own so you control what ingredients are in the dressing.  You won't have preservatives or additional unnecessary ingredients and they are fairly easy to make.

HLNB HealthyLivingChallenge II - Day 19

February 19th Day 19Yesterday I walked 1mile and I did the following exercises while watching the season finale of "Pan Am" as follows: (Note: You can get exercises in even when doing other things such as watching your favorite shows.  Just keep in mind you should be moving around as much as possible during your waking hours.  Even if it's just to do thigh kicks or side bends.  It makes exercising more fun and you eventually get used to moving around. It also helps burn fat calories and you still get to have fun too!)

Outer Thigh Kicks 12 reps 3 sets
Side Bends 12 reps 3 sets

I ate a salad, an avocado, some homemade salsa, drank 16 oz of green smoothies and drank 100% fruit juices with all three meals.

Laura receives a strange offer from Amanda.  What will Ted decide to do?  Will 1964 be what he expected?

Maggie makes a decision that could lead to troubles for her in 1964.

Kate is given a job offer.  Will she take it or decide to stay with Pan Am? I hope we get to find out in Season two.  Hope to see how 1964 turns out for Pan Am.
