Jennifer Lopez on Healthy Eating as a Triathlete and a Mom - SELF Magazine

Here is an interesting video with Jennifer Lopez and Lucy Danziger Editor of Self Magazine (from 2008) discussing healthy eating habits.  Although it's from 2008, it's an interesting video and fun to watch J-Lo in a comfortable setting talking so candidly about healthy foods.  These are some of the behind the scenes moments we don't get to read about when Self has someone on the cover of their magazine.  Lucky for us they had the cameras rolling for this interesting segment.

Temptation Thursday - Tropical Getaway

With the cold season now upon us I miss the warm weather so much.  I feel like summer just flew by too fast this year.  So today I'm tempted by the idea of a tropical getaway.  It would be so relaxing and it would give me one more chance to keep wearing shorts and not coats, gloves or sweaters.  Here are some pictures that make me long for my tropical getaway.

Pumpkin Recipes For Skin Care - No Tricks, Just Treats!

With Halloween coming I thought I'd post a few recipes for skin care that include pumpkin.  They are also homemade so they are less costly and they don't have preservatives or other harsh chemicals.  Pumpkins are also rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Zinc which are all good for your skin.  They also smell so good and you will smell good too when you are done. You might also want to eat some delicious pumpkin pie!

Simple Pumpkin Mask
Use 2 teaspoons of pumpkin puree, add a few ounces of almond oil and spread it on your face.  Keep it on until it dries (about 10 minutes) then rinse with warm water.

Pumpkin Mask for Dry Skin
2 teaspoons Pumpkin puree
1/2 teaspoon of Honey
1/4 teaspoon of Whipping Cream

Mix the ingredients and apply to your face.  Avoid the eye area.  Let dry (about 10 minutes).  Then rinse with tepid water.

Pumpkin Mask for Oily Skin
 2 teaspoons Pumpkin puree
1/2 teaspoon of Honey
1/4 teaspoon of Cranberry Juice

Mix the ingredients and apply to your face.  Avoid the eye area.  Let dry (about 10 minutes).  Then rinse with warm water.

Pumpkin Body Scrub
1/2 cup of Pumpkin puree
1/2 cup of Brown Sugar
1/4 teaspoon of Cinnamon

Mix the ingredients in a bowl. Take with you to the shower and use a washcloth or shower gloves and start smoothing onto your body in circular motions avoiding your face.  Once done you can rinse off with warm water and your body will feel silky smooth.

If you have a favorite pumpkin skin care recipe that you'd like to include, please post a comment for the rest of us to try out.

Saffron Spice

I've had a few recipes I wanted to try that had the spice Saffron in the ingredients.  However, when I go to buy Saffron in the store, it is very expensive.  I decided to research this spice and I found this interesting video from the Veria channel about a 4 day festival in Italy that is dedicated to Saffron.  I found the video very interesting and if one day I could travel to Italy, I'd love to go to this festival.  In the video they say that Saffron is more expensive than gold, and they aren't kidding.  I've heard it is a great spice in recipes and maybe one day I will break down and buy some and give the recipes a try.  In my research, I've found that there may be some good health benefits associated with using Saffron.  It is rich in vitamin A, Folic Acid, Riboflavin, Niacin and Vitamin C.  Saffron may also contain anti-cancer properties as well.  If you want to read more about Saffron you can read about it on Wikipedia, and in these good articles, Saffron nutrition facts (from the nutrition and you) and The golden spice saffron has golden health benefits too.  You can view the Veria video below which has great views of Italy and the festival.  There are also some good tips for using Saffron in this video as well.  The video is fun and informative.  I hope you will enjoy learning more about Saffron.

HLNB Healthy Eating/Keep Moving Challenge - Day 23

October 24rd Day 23:   Yesterday we walked around the neighborhood and I swept leaves off our back porch and sidewalks.  I was feeling under the weather so I didn't ride my stationary bike last night.  But I still watched "Dancing With The Stars".  I agree the judges especially Len have been pretty harsh on Hope.  I think she's doing a good job and I thought she looked good last night.  I don't think it was her worst dance.

Note:  You can turn off or mute my blog music on the right hand side with the music player before viewing the video below.

Maks or the Judges, who do you think was right? Do you think Hope will make it through with the low judges scores?  If you missed the show, catch this clip and decide for yourself.

For breakfast I ate a bowl of oatmeal and drank a glass of orange juice.  At lunch I had a cheese sandwich with tomatoes, lettuce and onions and I drank a glass of orange juice with cranberry juice.  For dinner we had some grilled chicken with barbecue sauce and I drank some cranberry raspberry juice.

HLNB Healthy Eating/Keep Moving Challenge - Day 22

October 23rd Day 22:   Yesterday we walked with our dog around the neighborhood.  We also saw some interesting birds outside, there was a large bird that looked kind of like an eagle but we weren't sure.  Some of the small birds were trying to get the bird to leave their tree but the large bird was going to stay as long as he wanted to stay.

                                                                      Eagles!

At breakfast I ate a bowl of the oatmeal cereal with coconut milk and drank a glass of orange juice.  For lunch we had some fried chicken with some french fries.  For dinner I ate another guacarito with a glass of Concord Grape V-Juice.  For snacks I ate some chips with salsa and some pumpkin seeds.  I also ate one piece of bruschetta. I drank water through the day as well.  I ate the bruschetta while I watched some of the new show Pan Am last night.

Bonus Tip of the Week - The White Jeans Trend

This week I'm attaching a video about the white jeans trend.  This is from Self Magazine's Senior Fashion Market Editor aka "The Denim Doctor" Lindsay Huggins.  She discusses how we can wear white jeans this season.

Tip of the Week - Dance Your Way Slim!

Here is another video from Self Magazine featuring Edyta Sliwinska (from Dancing With The Stars).  She is showing us some exercise moves that are actual dance steps from some of the dances we've seen on Dancing With The Stars like the Paso Doble, the Cha Cha and the Jive.  If you have ever wondered how the stars on the show do some of these dances, you can get a small glimpse and get the bonus of toning up and maybe shedding some pounds along the way. Edyta shows the moves in an easy to understand style.  If you have any interest in dancing as a way to exercise, this is a video you will enjoy.  And if you also watch Dancing With The Stars you can watch for these moves in some of the dances each week.  It can help us see if our favorite stars are making their marks!

HLNB Healthy Eating/Keep Moving Challenge - Day 20

October 21st Day 20:    Yesterday I worked around the house and yard.  I did some more leg exercises while I watched the movie "Maid in Manhattan" with Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes.

                                                            The walk in the park.

                                                                         How romantic.

This scene must have ended up on the cutting room floor, I don't remember this one.

                                                      All pictures courtesy of Pinterest

In the morning I ate a bowl of oatmeal with strawberries and drank a glass of orange juice.  I also drank a glass of cinnamon apple tea with some agave nectar in it as it was a bit cooler in the house and it helped me warm up inside. It also tasted good!  For lunch I ate what I call a guacarito for lunch.  I make myself some guacamole with my pico and put it in a tortilla with some cheese and hot sauce.  It tasted great! I also drank some concord grape V-8 juice with my meal.  At dinner we still had some of our ground round beef left over so I made us some homemade tacos again with our pico de gallo and homemade salsa.  We went off course a little bit and drank some soft drinks with dinner, I had a cream soda and my husband had a ginger ale.  For snacks during the day I ate some roasted peanuts.
